Chantry Chinook Classic Salmon Derby

Fish the “Chantry” - Lake Huron’s Largest Fishing Derby

The Chantry Chinook Classic Salmon Derby is held during the peak of summer, from Saturday, July 29 to Sunday, August 13 inclusive, 2017. It has become Lake Huron’s largest open water fishing derby, drawing over 40% of its participants to the area from a distance of greater than 80 kilometers. The tournament draws anglers and their families to the area for fishing and fun in the sun. Whether angling the crystal clear waters of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, relaxing on the sandy beaches or taking in the incredible sunsets, the Chantry is a true family vacation destination. The Derby runs for 16 days to encourage participants to spend three full weekends. These anglers and families often return for additional vacations to Bruce County.

The Derby boundary includes Lake Huron from Nine Mile River in the south to Lyle Island light house in the north and Georgian Bay from Cape Commodore at Colpoy’s Bay, north to Cabot Head, making the Chantry the largest derby on Lake Huron.

Family anglers, moms and dads, grandpas or grandmas are encouraged to participate in Kid’s Day events on Saturday, August 5th. A free Kids Day is held at our weigh stations in Kincardine, Port Elgin, Pike Bay, Wiarton and Sauble River Marina, with prizes awarded to all kids entered, including a special draw for a bicycle at each location. A bike will also be awarded for the largest salmon caught by a youth entered in the derby from a boat this date, plus $500 cash prize for the largest salmon by a youth during the derby.

There are prize categories for the entire family including Ladies Days July 30th and Aug 6th and Seniors Days August 2nd and August 9th. For the more seriously competitive angler there are a number of cash and prize boards awarded, including: the Top 25 Salmon, Top 5 Trout, largest Brown Trout and daily prizes. Considering the success of the Rainbow/Steelhead fishery on the Saugeen River, there is a rainbow prize category. The many prizes awarded make for the largest prize package Derby on Lake Huron.

Derby Tickets: Single $30.00, Family $70.00, available at various ticket outlets and online via PayPal

Our partnership in conservation with the Lake Huron Fishing Club continues to be of the utmost importance to the entire sports fishing industry. The Lake Huron Fishing Club, a non-profit organization, uses the funds generated from the Derby to continue its educational school hatchery program, extensive stocking of salmon and trout from their hatcheries in Port Elgin and Kincardine along with their rehabilitation of local tributaries to improve fish habitat. The club endeavors to protect the fishing rights of all citizens and assist Government agencies on assessment and various new enhancement programs involving the Lake Huron region fishery. Their efforts ensure Lake Huron remains the premiere Great Lakes fishing and Bruce County tourism destination for our many participants and anglers all season long.
