Britt/Key River "Just off the Bay - Just off the beaten path"
The village of Britt is located halfway between Parry Sound and Sudbury, just far enough off the highway that most folks bypass Hwy 526 that leads to this sleepy little enclave. However, visitors can still have all the perks that go with a waterfront vacation. Britt has some of the finest full service marinas on Georgian Bay where boaters can dock or rent boats, water sports equipment and fishing supplies. Local accommodations include waterfront inn suites, cottages and campgrounds. Guests can enjoy dining overlooking the river in Britt where fresh fish dinners are superb. The Key River also provides visitor services with direct access to Georgian Bay. Wild blueberry picking is fabulous throughout the area.
Britt’s main attraction is the mighty Magnetawan River that flows into even mightier Georgian Bay. The village is close to both, so boaters and anglers have quick access to the best cruising and fishing waters in the world. This is the closest community to the Churchill Islands, Dead Island and the fabulous Bustard Islands, part of French River Provincial Park; areas that are noted for their outstanding scenery, plentiful bass, pickerel, pike and muskellunge. White water enthusiasts can paddle the Magnetawan River canoe route and play in its powerful rapids. The river has several channels that form a circular route. See the coast guard rescue vessel in Britt and the lighthouse out at the inlet. Visitors can find intriguing history at Britt’s shrine or the pioneer graveyard located near Byng Inlet on Hwy 645.
Nearby Grundy Lake Provincial Park has beautiful camping and beaches, including group campsites and drive-through sites for motor homes. The park contains old growth forest, trails and scenic lookouts. It has a nature display centre and operates guided hikes, canoe instruction and children’s programs. Canoe and boat rentals are located outside the park at the junction of Hwy 522 & 69 or at the Key River. Park Bus transit service to the park from Toronto is available: 1-800-928-7101.
